How to Lead When People Suck

May 26, 2025

There’s always that one person in a meeting, “Well, I thought ______ was handling that…” OR “Sounds like a ______ problem…”  A classic move, toss the hot potato and walk away.

Whether you’re on the shop floor or in the conference room, blame travels fast and that energy is contagious. Those energy-drainers aren’t going anywhere. What we do in that moment is where the energy shift happens (βž–or βž•).

Try this micro-moment βž• energy switch:
“Let’s explore what got missed and make sure we have clear next steps moving forward.”

Stress has been here, stress will always be. Some people suck and will continue to play that role. Energy management is our response to it. Knowing more about the work styles and the actual needs they may be searching for will help you guide when to walk away from the 'suck' and when to support. Check out the DISC behavioral science work styles below to guide your next draining interaction into addressing the real conflict.
